PORT CLOSURE INFO

In Isla Mujeres, port closures are decided by the local Port Captain. They assess weather and sea conditions and determine whether it is safe for boats to operate and for water activities to take place. These decisions are made with safety as the priority for guests, crews, and operators.

A port closure does not always mean that all activities are stopped. Restrictions can depend on several factors, including wind strength, wave height, and overall sea conditions. The size and type of boat is also important. In some cases, larger vessels such as catamarans may still be permitted to operate, while smaller boats used for activities like snorkeling trips may be restricted. Certain activities may be paused while others are allowed to continue, depending on the conditions at the time.

All tour operators are required to follow the Port Captain’s instructions.

Port closures are a normal and necessary part of island life, particularly during periods of strong winds or unsettled weather. While they can be inconvenient, they are put in place to reduce risk and ensure that everyone on the water remains safe.
