In mid March, one of the most historic sites on Isla Mujeres is set to offically reopen to the public. After a period of restoration, Hacienda Mundaca is preparing to welcome visitors once again, offering a chance to explore one of the island’s most well known legends while also experiencing a space dedicated to nature, history, and culture.

Located in the southern part of the island, Hacienda Mundaca is tied to the story of the pirate Fermin Antonio Mundaca y Marecheaga, a figure whose life on Isla Mujeres has become part of local legend. Hacienda Mundaca was once the center of his grand estate, built during the 19th century. While much of the structure is now in ruins, the site remains one of the most intriguing historical locations on the island.

The upcoming reopening comes after a rehabilitation project led by President Atenea Gomez Ricalde and her government. The aim has been to restore the area as a space where visitors and locals can reconnect with the island’s history while enjoying its natural environment.
The work includes new walking paths throughout the park, informational signage with QR codes that allow visitors to learn more about the history of the site, and a renovated amphitheater that will host cultural activities and events. Accessibility improvements have also been added so that more people can comfortably explore the grounds.

One of the most notable additions is a birdwatching tower, which will allow visitors to observe the variety of bird species that live in the area. The park is considered a refuge for local flora and fauna, and the tower offers views across the surrounding landscape where many species can be seen in their natural habitat.

On March 4, 2026, Isla Mujeres marked the 509th anniversary of the island’s discovery with a cultural event held at Mundaca Park. It was the first time the anniversary celebration took place at this location. The event highlighted the importance of the site to the island’s heritage and marked a step toward its reopening.
When the site reopens in mid March, Hacienda Mundaca will once again be a place where you can walk through the remains of the historic estate, learn about the story of its owner, and explore a park that has long been part of the island’s cultural memory. With its natural surroundings and new birdwatching areas, it will also offer a space for nature lovers to enjoy the flora, fauna, and wildlife found in this quieter part of Isla Mujeres.
